Cruising with only a couple of people can be idyllic, but what happens when the more experienced person becomes incapacitated or is busy with an accelerating issue? The time to prepare is now—by developing the needed skills and practicing aboard—alone and as a team.
Safety for Cruising Couples was developed by the Cruising Club of America. The course guides a short-handed crew to become skilled partners in managing the boat and responding to emergencies. The day-long course focuses on improving redundancy in seamanship practices that include crew overboard rescue, safety equipment, and navigation while improving communication effectiveness—aboard the boat and by radio—and sharing best practices to prepare for the challenges ahead. Every crew member benefits, whether a veteran offshore skipper, a spouse, a child, or a crew new to the boat.
This is not about turning someone into a master mariner overnight—it’s about making sure that, when it matters most, each person aboard knows what to do.
